However, this 'snap-back' effect does not mean you are doing the exercises wrong. It means your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Think of your nervous system as a thermostat. A thermostat is not broken when it keeps returning the room to the temperature it is set to; it is simply responding to the data it receives.
Tools like the double inhale or tapping are essentially like putting a warm hand over the thermostat’s sensor. You can temporarily trick the sensor into thinking the room is warmer, but once you remove your hand, the sensor reads the actual ambient temperature and kicks the heater back on. In this analogy, the 'ambient temperature' is your internal biological terrain. If your body is still receiving a signal that it is not safe to let go and repair, no 60-second reset can force a permanent shift in your baseline calibration.

These practices are meaningful ways to interrupt the default chemistry of stress. They provide the body with much-needed 'safety' inputs that can, over time, help lower the systemic inflammatory response. However, they should be viewed as tools within a larger strategy, not as a standalone cure for a complex biological issue.
The most successful path to lasting regulation involves a dual approach. You must address the cognitive and emotional patterns through therapy or somatic work, as our thoughts do indeed move our chemistry. But you must simultaneously address the physical terrain—the hormones, the gut, the inflammation, and the environment. When you stop treating the nervous system as the origin of the problem and start treating it as a readout of your internal health, you can finally begin the work of changing the temperature of the room rather than just tricking the sensor.
