Steve Hardison: The Ultimate Coach on the Power of Being

True transformation is not a matter of what you do, but a matter of who you are being in the moment you do it.

The Seed and the Fruit

Most people spend their lives trying to manage their 'doing.' They focus on their actions, their habits, and their external results, hoping that if they work hard enough, they will eventually feel successful or happy. But this is an inversion of how life actually works. Everything you do grows out of who you are being. Think of being as a seed and doing as the fruit. If you plant an apricot seed, you get an apricot tree; you don't plant an apricot and expect a watermelon. Similarly, if your internal state is one of skepticism or fear, your actions will be skeptical and fearful, and your results will reflect that.

Being is a possibility that we create through our thoughts and our speech. If the narrative in your mind is 'I can't succeed' or 'they don't like me,' those ideas eventually become part of your identity. You become the person who cannot succeed. To change the fruit of your life, you must go back to the seed. You must become aware that there is a 'being' inside you and that you have a choice in how that being shows up. You can choose to be loving, thankful, or inspired, and from that state, your actions will naturally align with those qualities.

The Mirror of the Self

When people read about the lives of others, they often treat it as a biography—a cool story about someone else's journey. But to truly transform, you must learn to read your own life as an autobiography in progress. Every interaction and every challenge is a mirror reflecting your current state of being. If you look at a stranger and feel distrust, that says more about your being than it does about the stranger. I often say that the ultimate spirituality is self-love. If I am loving myself, I am able to see the greatness in others, even those I have never met.

This shift in perspective turns every page of your life into an opportunity. When you stop judging and start observing, you see that you have the power to modify your being to serve you better. You are not a fixed entity; you are a continuous creation. By reading your own experiences through the lens of who you want to become, you unlock a new level of existence where you are no longer a victim of your past, but the conscious author of your future.

Relationships as a Daily Creation

There is no such thing as a relationship without issues. The growth of a relationship is found in how you handle those challenges, not in the absence of them. In reality, you never actually meet another person in the way you think you do; you only meet the ideas you have about them. If a husband thinks his wife is burdensome, that is the woman who will show up for him. If he chooses to see her as amazing and acknowledges her greatness daily, that is the woman he will experience.

Relationships require daily creation. It is not enough to say 'I love you' once a week. You must find creative ways every single day to ensure your partner knows they are valued. This isn't about manipulation; it's about managing your own mind. By consciously holding a vision of your partner’s greatness, you create the space for that greatness to manifest. You create yourself, you create your partner, and you create the world you see through the ideas you choose to plant.

The Power of Being Your Word

One of the most vital practices in life is learning to be your word. When you do what you say you will do, you build a foundation of integrity that allows you to create powerfully. Many people are 'being their excuses' rather than 'being their word.' If you plant excuses, you reap a life of limitations. But if you practice keeping your word—even the small promises you make to yourself—you eventually reach a point where you can predict your future. You know that if you say something will happen, it will happen, because you have trained yourself to be the kind of person who makes it so.

This level of integrity is not about being perfect; it is about a state of being where what you say matters. In various scriptures, creation begins with speech: 'Let there be light.' There is a divine quality to speech when it is backed by the integrity of being. When you can trust yourself, others can count on you, and the friction of life begins to dissolve. You stop sweating the small stuff because you are anchored in a commitment to your own word.

Redefining Wealth and Value

Money is as inanimate as a brick. It doesn't think or move on its own; it is simply an exchange of value. Your relationship with money is what determines whether it flows toward you or away from you. If your state of being is 'money is hard to come by,' you are planting a seed of scarcity. To alter your financial reality, you must alter your relationship with the idea of money. It is the easiest thing to come by when you have a good idea or a service to offer, but you must first see yourself as a person of value.

There is a profound difference between cost and value. Many people focus on the cost of things, trying to save money while sacrificing quality. But true wealth comes from understanding value. A high-quality tool or a transformative experience may have a high cost, but its value over time is far greater than a cheap alternative. When you shift your being to focus on contribution and value rather than lack and cost, you begin to see opportunities for prosperity everywhere.

Living with Quality Time Remaining

We all have a finite amount of 'Quality Time Remaining' (QTR). Whether you are eighteen or sixty-seven, the clock is ticking on the days you have left to contribute and love. When you live with an awareness of your QTR, you stop wasting time on petty disagreements, self-righteousness, and anger. You realize that suffering is often optional—a result of the messy ideas in our heads rather than the reality of the world.

My challenge to anyone seeking a better life is to stop waiting for a seven-day plan and start with the present moment. Commit to your growth right now. Whether it's reading a book that challenges your perspective or attending an event that shifts your energy, the act of commitment is what alters your state of being. Don't just go through life; grow through it. Decide who you are going to be before the situation happens, and stay committed to that being regardless of the outcome. That is the path to an extraordinary life.
