France's Descent: High Taxes, Demographic Decline, and the Threat of Civil Collapse

Crushing state spending, demographic decline, and unmanaged migration are pushing France toward a historic breaking point.

The Argentine Path of Europe

Conditions across Britain look grim, but across the Channel, France faces an even steeper slide. Recent economic figures show French wealth per capita has fallen below the European Union average. On an index where 100 represents the bloc's midpoint, Britain sits at 99 and Germany at 111. France has fallen to 98, placing it on par with Italy. One former French civil servant observed that the country has become the Argentina of Europe. He warned that the nation is trapped in an infernal spiral toward third-world status.

The newly passed national budget drives this slide forward. The French state now spends 1.7 trillion euros annually. Public expenditure consumes 57.2 percent of total gross domestic product. That is higher than the Soviet Union's state spending of roughly 50 percent during the year before it collapsed. By contrast, Britain spends roughly 46 to 47 percent of its output. A system where the state takes and spends nearly six out of every ten euros produced makes everyday citizens little more than dependents. The average French worker spends nearly two-thirds of the year working solely to fund the machinery of government.

Penalizing Work to Subsidize Idleness

This crushing fiscal structure produces absurd economic distortions. In France today, sixty-five-year-old retirees enjoy higher incomes than working adults. The average pensioner receives roughly 1,600 euros a month, while the average worker earns less. Productive adults work long hours only to take home less cash than those who have left the workforce. For young workers starting their careers, the contract between effort and reward has broken down entirely.

To American observers, a monthly income of 1,600 euros sounds modest. The comparison underlines how poor Europe has actually become. While citizens in the United States command vastly greater wealth, Europeans rarely recognize their own impoverishment. They endure punishing tax rates that consume months of their labor each year. Productive citizens pay massive bills to maintain a bloated welfare apparatus that discourages industry and penalizes achievement.

The Death of the Managerial Consensus

This economic decay has destroyed faith in the political establishment. Emmanuel Macron has become the most unpopular president in seventy years of modern French history. His approval rating sits at just 11 percent, mirroring Keir Starmer's collapse in Britain to around 13 or 14 percent. Fully 58 percent of the French public want Macron to resign, and 90 percent believe the nation is in terminal decline. The public consensus around technocratic, globalist management has shattered. Yet the leaders who created this crisis refuse to leave their posts.

The political philosophy of internationalist managerialism has exhausted itself. Voters understand that these policies caused their living standards to collapse, but the political elite clings stubbornly to power. Nothing will improve until governments shrink the state, shut their borders, and ensure that those who work earn more than those who do not. Instead, the current leadership offers cosmetic adjustments while the fundamental structure rots.

A Shrinking Native Population

France's economic crisis sits alongside a historic demographic contraction. For the first time in modern records, the French natural population is declining, with deaths exceeding births by roughly 6,000 people. While that numerical deficit is still small, it reflects deep pessimism about the future. Impoverished citizens who see no economic prospects and feel hemmed in by rapid social change simply stop forming families. A society that ceases to reproduce has lost confidence in its own survival.

At the same time, abortion rates have climbed. In 2023, France recorded 243,000 abortions, a sharp rise over the previous year. Out of an expected annual cohort of roughly 900,000 potential births, more than a quarter are terminated, leaving total births at around 640,000. Future generations facing demographic collapse will find it incomprehensible that society treated human life so carelessly. Rather than treasuring every child, the nation permits widespread termination while suffering from acute population decline.

Mass Migration and Urban Transformation

As native births drop, immigration has reached record volumes. In 2025, authorities granted 348,000 first-time residence permits, primarily to migrants from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. More than one in three babies born in France now has at least one foreign-born parent. In Britain, roughly 38 percent of children have foreign ancestry, but the transformation in France is even more concentrated.

Paris illustrates the scale of this demographic change. Roughly two-thirds of the city's inhabitants are now of non-local origin. While London has shifted dramatically, with about 40 percent of residents born abroad, Paris has altered at an even faster pace. Many arriving migrants show little affection for French culture, institutions, or history. They enter an economically stagnant nation, take advantage of public assistance, and contribute to an atmosphere of estrangement that fractures the capital.

Lawlessness and the Edge of Disorder

This demographic shift has brought severe security problems. On public transit in Paris, foreigners commit two-thirds of all robberies, physical assaults, and sexual violence. Forty-three percent of those offenses are carried out by nationals from North African countries. Across the nation, sexual offenses on public transportation have jumped by 86 percent. Cities across France have had to institute nighttime curfews to maintain basic order in the streets.

French authorities compound this problem through passive policing of radicalism. Traditional Muslim states, from Saudi Arabia to Yemen, act decisively against religious extremists by shutting rogue mosques and arresting radical preachers. Western European governments, paralyzed by liberal guilt, permit extremist ideas to spread openly under the banner of tolerance. When political unrest erupts, the French state responds by deploying 80,000 police officers to quiet the streets. Yet heavy policing treats the symptoms while ignoring the underlying causes.

The Looming Existential Reckoning

These compounding pressures have convinced ordinary citizens that France is on the verge of civil conflict. Long-time observers report hearing ordinary tradesmen, from market fishmongers to neighborhood shopkeepers, openly demand the return of the guillotine. The anger is palpable. Citizens feel betrayed by a political class that filled their towns with violent offenders while punishing law-abiding taxpayers. The old historic rivalry between England and France was never existential. Both sides fought over power and territory, but neither sought to erase the other as a distinct people. Today, both nations face internal policies that threaten their survival.

The resolution to this crisis will not be gentle. When the political dam breaks, a hard-right government will inevitably take power with a mandate to restore order by force. Fixing the damage will require halting immigration, cutting off state welfare subsidies, deploying the military on domestic soil, and deporting millions of people who entered unlawfully. The French state has pushed its people to the brink. Unless leaders act immediately to close borders, dismantle the bloated bureaucracy, and restore public safety, open conflict on the streets will become inevitable.
